 This is a humorous look at our dependence on technology, and how sometimes we all need to take a break before we plug in again!

Plug Me In!

"I'm dying! I'm dying!"

My poor cell phone cried,

But I paid it no heed

As I headed outside;

The garden was quiet,

Time flew along,

The birds in the trees

Held me rapt with their song;

Back in the house,

No pings could be heard,

No greeting from Siri,

Not a single ring stirred;

"I can't understand

This new state of mind;

It's just so unlike her

To leave me behind,"

One last desperate try;

To the birds looking in,

"I really don't mean

To intrude on your din,

Tell her all is forgiven,

But time's running thin;

Please tweet her my message—

Please, please, plug me in!"

 This poem speaks to my nostalgic longing to step into a meadow of childhood hope once more:

Back To The Meadow

 Oh, how I miss those childhood days,

Where oft on lazy summer days,

I wandered through the colours,

Picking daisies as I passed,

Counting petals, one by one,

The last one sighing, "We are done—

He loves me not, alas!"

Meet me in the meadow,

Where the nodding daisies dance,

Where the butterflies and buzzing bees,

Dodge around the watchful trees,

Soaring now above the tips

Of those snow-white landing strips,

Endowed with elegance;

Meet me in the meadow,

When the morning dew has past,

And all the flowers have been infused

With moisture dropped in rainbow hues;

When buttercups and clover sweet

Greet my touch and heed my feet,

That move along too fast;

Meet me in the meadow

And bring your cares along,

Let them come into perspective,

They are only an elective,

Let childhood joy replace your care,

Let nature's scents flow through your hair,

And healing memories be strong.

Isolation Blues!

Isolation Blues!

These days, we're all singing the Isolation blues in our own unique ways; some of us are feeling very out of tune and trying hard to reach those positive high notes;  For some of us, we are finding the verses getting annoyingly repetitious!
Please forgive the musical irony - It comes after listening to the many wonderful concerts, at so many levels that are being generously offered by musicians, artists and athletes, both locally and around the world to raise money to help our fellow countrymen during this time of crisis.
All of us want to contribute whatever talents we have, to express our love and thanks to all of the front line workers putting themselves at risk every day, and to help the less fortunate.   Giving back in whatever way we can,  particularly the act of sacrificing closeness with our family and friends, makes us all part of this wonderful 'Team Canada'.

As I was breathing deeply, and letting go of the stress for awhile, I wrote a simple little poem that expresses a desire for peaceful happy times.  It also encompasses gratitude for the silver lining in all of this down time - a chance to really look and listen to each other, to our children and grandchildren, and to appreciate the really important elements of life.

What if?

What if there was no war to fear,
No hurtful words
To wound the ear,
No vain attempt
To have it all,
No selfish smirks
When others fall;

What if we gathered smiles and flowers,
If loving acts
Were our super powers;
If we rose each day
In gratitude,
Spreading smiles
In happy mood;

If we, like children, saw the world,
One tiny wonder
At a time,
With curiosity
Unfurled,
Each challenge,
But a tree to climb;

What if we saw our work as play,
And laughed,
As little children do;
While giving love
In simple ways,
Needing just to hear,
 "Me too!"

Then, let us lay our troubles down,
And take some time,
Be still awhile,
Take our cue
From little ones,
Paint rainbows,
And share a smile!

Autumn - a time to slow down and notice all of the elements of the Great Composer's works:

Yesterday, as I headed off on my walk down to the river, I slowed my pace and began to take note of all the little wonders around me.  I hadn't put on my 'little boots' in quite a while and it proved very rewarding.   I took deep breaths and filled my lungs with the smells of Autumn; ripening crops, grasses and flowers  ... and fish?    Coming down the path towards me was  an unexpected  wonder - a young mink came barrelling up the path towards me and almost went head over heels making an abrupt stop; I could almost hear his "Whoa!!"    Apparently, he was a regular customer or should I say, recycler, checking out the discarded fish left by fishermen along the bank.    He took a detour around me down the length of the riverbank, stopping every once in awhile to sit up and check me out, and I took time out to just stand and watch him.  I was filled with a special feeling of joy in being noticed by this free spirit.

As I neared our street on the way home, my little boots must still have been showing; coming down the street towards me were three young boys on bicycles, and as they passed me they each in turn held up a hand for a 'high five!'   They were playing a game to see how many of the people they encountered would respond to their invitation.   Once more, I felt a special joy in being included in the play of these free spirits!
Autumn's Call To Rest
The great Conductor
Takes up his baton,
A silence fills the air;
He calls for a rest,
Which is sometimes the best
Of all sounds to a hopeful ear;

Autumn stands at attention,
Mother Nature takes her cue,
As the Great Composer's work takes form,
In colours of every hue,

He begins with a gentle adagio,
Setting the perfect pace,
Stepping up to lead the others,
As the players take their place;

Each element of life comes in
At their appointed time,
Adding their sweet harmony,
To a song of wordless rhyme;

From andante to allegro,
The symphony builds and grows,
In colours and sounds and sights profound,
To crescendo as Nature glows!

And we with our gifts, our colours,
Are invited to take our place,
To stand at attention and listen,
Then to sing with strength and  grace,
And to heed the request,
To wait for the best,
The song is not finished,
But merely at rest.

In Dreams - Be Not Afraid

In Dreams
"In Dreams I walk with you,
In Dreams I talk with you."   - Roy Orbison

Many of us will have had the experience of feeling the presence of a loved one who has passed away - even to the point of catching a familiar or exotic scent.  There is so much more to this life than we can ever comprehend.  So, whether we are just remembering in a very visceral way that soul or whether they are possibly wanting to communicate something to us is beyond our actually knowing.  Sometimes we perceive these moments as a comforting hand on our shoulder, a kiss on our forehead, a prayer for our strengthening.  In this positive dream-filled light, I wrote the following:

In Dreams - Be Not Afraid
I had a dream
The other night,
A visit from a friend,
A vision so intense and real
And as close as we had been,
There was something more
In how she looked
That I could not comprehend;

Her laughter filled
The atmosphere,
She seemed without a care,
And though I reached
To touch her hand,
I only touched the air,
Still, I caught a fragrance rare;

In soft but brilliant lightness,
In and out of view she went
And I wondered  as I drifted off,
Did I call, or was she sent;
It settled all around me,
That smile I knew so well,
And lifted my own spirit,
As back to sleep I fell;

I still can feel that warmth of hope,
That brief reunion gift;
Each morning now, it wakes with me
And brings a welcome lift
That I humbly try to pass along,
In small but smiling ways,
Little bits of sunshine
To brighten others' days,
And let them know, "You are not alone,
- Be not afraid."

Stepping Into Peace

It's December, and the Christmas rush is upon us; There are wonderful celebrations to plan and attend, a tree to put up and decorate, a house to clean and decorate, and cookies to bake and decorate!  Sometimes it is hard to find the peace that is supposed to be the main focus of the season.  When I find myself starting to go under in the waves of too much stress, I try to remember to take a step back and find the quiet.
To let go of stress and step into peace is like stepping into a sturdy canoe in the wee hours of the morning and letting yourself  follow the shoreline of a river; not in any rush to reach a destination, but just enjoying the quiet conversation of your surroundings, and being grateful to the river for allowing you to ride along in its sparkling currents.
For a brief time, you and your thoughts are taking an intimate journey together, leaving all of your baggage, including your shoes, behind on the shore.

Finding My Smile

The gentle movements of a Tai Chi session this morning had me
Watching the flow of my hands,
And once again, I felt there the wooden caress of a paddle;
I was stepping into my mental canoe,
Slipping away on daydreams
Of early morning escapes
Beside a gentle river bank,
Feeling the solitude as I float downstream across flat water,
Free of man-made sounds in their various forms;
I close my eyes,
Enjoying the rocking of the canoe,
trusting the gentle movement of the river
 to carry me along wherever it is going;
I feel again the water washing around my toes as I invite some of it aboard with every stroke of my paddle;
My memory took a deep breath and there it was: the wonderful atmosphere;
Smells of algae, fish, flowers,
And the sounds of nature; frogs, birds, and various forms of flying tag-a-longs who found it amusing to play tag on my hat and hide-and-seek around my ankles - taking the occasional nibble;
I grabbed hold of that spiritual oar of freedom,
Gave it a mental pull,
-  And I smiled.
My hands, now resting,
Palms up,  in peace.

Whether your 'peace escape' is in a mental canoe, a quiet chapel, or laying in the arms of a frosty but all-accepting snow angel, may you find your own way to step into peace, find your smile, and leave your heavy baggage behind on the shore.
Wishing you all peace this Christmas and far beyond.

Lament For Friendship

Life is always both unpredictable and precious, and friendship is to be cherished.  It saddens me to see and hear the damage to the very special friendship that we have held with our neighbours to the South.  Let us pray that respect and healing will gain the upper hand.

Lament For Friendship
 What a sad thing,
When friends fall out,
And lose togetherness,
Becoming less;
When our common goals and aspirations
Become frayed - torn at the edges,
When talk is for show,
Fleeting bravado,
That weakens our bonds,
Leaves us struggling to cope,
Grasping at hope;

Why plant seeds of doubt,
What's this fear all about?
And what thanks do we send
To our struggling earth  mother,
As we feign to defend
Each from the other;

What do we gain
By inflicting pain;
In the glare of  'beware!',
How do we repair?

'Neath the weight of our words,
Our hearts long for peace,
For hurts to be healed,
For struggle to cease;

Then, let our falling out be ended,
And hands of friendship be extended;
Around this world, our common home,
Let's build a wall of toleration,
Made up of every tribe and nation's
Hands joined together in respect and love;
That would be a wall
That we could all get behind.

A Pause In Nature

I love the Fall season, when Mother Nature takes a deep breath, a pause, and calls, "Break Time!"  Then she gathers up all of the stresses of the rest of the year and lets them all go in one glorious coloured exhalation.
 Those stresses may have been in the form of uplifting growth experiences, or the weighty regrets of our individual unique gifts that have been left un-added to life's beauty;  Add in the fears created by world events and it's no wonder that our posture becomes less than erect and our gait slower .  Then along comes Nature with her reminder to be patient with ourselves,  that the year is maturing, and so are we, as day by day we release our own amazing colours into the world, both in our speech and in our actions.
  In this season of thanksgiving, as  Autumn colours swirl around us, Let's take her lead, and exhale - just let it all go;  A humble, quiet walk can be just what the doctor ordered:

A Humble Walk, A Silent Talk

I contemplated God's beauty
As I walked in the woods;
I breathed in His peace,
And it did my heart good.

In this green sanctuary,
In soft, quiet mood,
I lowered my head,
And it did my heart good.

How many have passed here,
And paused where I stood?
I greeted their presence,
And it did my heart good.

My spirit watched humbly
As leaves gently fell,
And covered my footsteps
'Till no one could tell
That one Fall afternoon
I had come to these woods,
I had partaken peace;
It had done my heart good.

Canada Day - 150 Reasons to Dream!

A man is only as rich as his dreams,
Only as happy as those dreams fulfilled,
In the giving of self
To a world that is waiting;
Its children, its helpless, its aged and hurting,
For the hope that only his dreams can build.

A country is only as rich as its dreams,
Only as wealthy
As the hope that it feeds
To its children, its homeless, its helpless,
Its peoples;
Dear Canada, thank you for planting these seeds.

That this world  will be made up of countries with dreams,
Fed richly with freedom till each dream comes true,
For our children, our aged, our homeless, our helpless,
A world filled with hope,
That is my dream for you.

Nice Ta Meetcha!   - The Power Of A Biscuit!

That's it!  I've Had it!   Time to bake biscuits!
Enough of all of these doom and gloom forecasts, whether political or weather-related;  It's time to bake  some love into some biscuits. Whatever form your biscuits take, whatever your 'knead' may be - let's sit down with a nice cup of tea and take a healing time-out  - calories be darned!

Each time that I recreate my mother-in-law, Joan's wonderful shortbread biscuit recipe, I find myself adding something extra to the mix that might make it even more delicious.  So far the ingredients are coming from Toronto, B.C., Ontario, Quebec, Indonesia, and the U.S.   How exotic is that!

As I lovingly work the ingredients into small crumbs, on their way to the final mix, I am aware of the dependence of each of them on the others in order to form. These ingredients had never met before today - stayed in their separate cupboards, but once introduced and the more I let them combine and work together, the finer they have become.  My trained ear is hearing them as they compliment each other at great length, with 'Nice ta meetchas' happening all around!

I have now come full circle, contemplating world issues again, but through the lens of a biscuit baker.  We are all part of this wonderful recipe called mankind, and whether we admit it or not, we are all dependent on each other in order to get from crumb to delicious biscuit, to reach our full potential;
 We each have something to offer that no one else can give, but we can't find out what that something is until we start coming out of our cupboards and offering our 'nice ta meetcha's.

 Ah, the zen of the biscuit - may its force be with you!

A Mother's Reflection:

My newborn slept against my breast,
And I whispered, "How beautiful."
I held him out to the world,
And it echoed, "How beautiful."
I sent him into the world,
And the world touched him
And I felt pride, and I felt fear.
He came home wounded,
And I held him against my breast,
And I whispered,  "How unfair."
Then I sent him out again,
Armed with tools that I hoped would help:
Love, faith, patience, tolerance, kindness, listening skills,
And I said to him, "Be my peacemaker."
He came back home confused and wounded,
And I said to him, "Don't despair, you are growing, and I am so proud of you,
This pain will be part of your strengthening."
And he went back into the world,
Bruised, but determined and hopeful.
Then he laughed,
And the heart of the world skipped a beat,
For he had touched the world, and it had responded,
He became aware of a unique something within that he possessed,
That was his to build, develop, and share.
He wondered aloud, "Who am I?"
And a voice answered;
He knew that voice,
It whispered, "How beautiful."
And again,
"You are mine, you are more precious
Than you can possibly imagine."
And this mother echoed in gratitude,

"How beautiful!"

This Christmas - I Don't Want Much!

I Don't Want Much!

Christmas is not something that just happens,

It is built out of priceless gifts - our gifts to the Christ Child whose coming brought hope into the world.

Who and where are the wise ones who come to the manger today?

Take a deep look into the eyes of children when we think we have wisdom;

They have a way of unmasking us and revealing our unsure inner child.

The wisest responses are those spoken by our actions -

 A reassuring, love-filled hug is often the immediate answer that they are seeking, even if they don't realize it right away.

 They may hear our words, but  they will remember our actions, our kindnesses - no fancy wrapping needed -  there is enough beauty  in that gift.

I only want

A Christmas tree

With tiny bells that play,

And underneath, a little water

To give it life each day.

I only want

A song of joy,

Like tinkling bells that play,

To fill me up, like living water,

And lift my life each day.

I only want

A little hope

And happy bells to play,

When I get up on Christmas morning,

To ring in Christmas Day!

I only want

A little peace

And bells that ring and say:

"For all the world - the gift of water

For everyone each day!"

A  little joy, a little hope,

A little peace to help us cope,

That's water to my little tree,

The one that grows

Inside of me!

Christmas comes but once a year, but let's invite the Christmas Spirit to dwell in our hearts all year long, and promise to give it a top-up each December 25th.  In the meantime, let's keep building!

Pull On Those Boots!

Pull on Those Boots!

I ran into a lovely friend at a Café the other day who has been having serious health issues.  She told me that she has made a conscious decision to look on the bright and happy side of life - no matter what pain or disability she is suffering at any given moment,  to look around her and find beauty ;  to encounter happiness in whatever form, in her present surroundings and to do something that made her happy - right now.  She would no longer stress about the things that were out of her control, longing to be able to do larger things that were goals for a future time when her health improved, but she would build up her life from this exact moment on - in happiness.
How inspiring!   I got back home and headed out for a walk to meditate on all of the things going on in my own life, and I experienced one such moment - a child moment!   I was filled with a sense of peace and wonder as I let myself notice an intricate fallen leaf on the ground, a tiny yellow flower struggling through the long grass, a bird singing its song over the blustering of  the wind, the sound of the water lapping against the rocks and spraying the shoreline, the pair of mallard ducks bobbing over the waves, unperturbed by the frigid water temperature, and I breathed in the indescribable smells of the river - the smells of life and the scent  of memories;  so much happening around me, partners of adversity and peace moving with grace around this great dance hall, constantly learning new steps.
 A little poem in my "How To Grow A Puddle" book popped into my head; It's a reminder of what we miss when we look too far or too high in our search for beauty and wonder on life's walk:

           Big Boot And Little Boot

            Big Boot
            And Little Boot,
            Walking hand in hand,
            Down the lane together,
            Found a wonderland!

            Every pebble
            Was a treasure,
            Every tiny flower and weed
            Was worth a closer look;
            Yes!  It’s beautiful, indeed!

            Bigger boots
            See larger
            And more complicated views,
            Than what lies beneath our noses,
            And underneath our shoes!

Just for this day, one moment at a time, I will check for the treasures under and around my 'boots',  smile often,  and count my blessings!

Off With Her Hat!

Life is a highway,

Crossing hills and streams,

But it’s often on a detour

That we realize our dreams.

On the highway, there is loud noise, fast decisions to be made, and frustration at slow or reckless drivers - so much impatience for the sake of a one-to-five minute interval of time, saved or lost.  We are all fellow travelers on life's highway, each in need of and deserving of, a hearty dose of  B.O.D. (benefit of the doubt).

Lately, my head has been longing for quiet drives down beautiful country roads and lanes, where nothing is asked but just to let go, throw off the hat and to slow down and breathe.

 ‘Take me home, country roads, to the place I belong'.   John Denver has been gone 15 years but I find myself right back where I belong every time I turn on his music and listen to his thoughtful lyrics.  Many times it's the stereo in my head playing, and that amazing sound system doesn't drain any power source; it just seems to replace negatives and add positive charges - How good is that?!  (love this 'Jane expression'!)

So, when one of  life's detours off of its busy highway comes along, the delay  may initially be frustrating but, given time, we may hear its voice speaking or singing in a calm reassuring manner:  ‘Why not have a look around since we’re now committed to each other?’

A highway is not always the surest, and certainly not the most peaceful way to a destination - and we occasionally need to follow our heart's GPS: perhaps a trip down a beautiful old side road is actually the route we were looking for all along.  As I fly (make that flutter) along on life’s bi-ways, letting my hat fly off,  that cool, peaceful breeze of tolerance feels wonderfully refreshing!

Be Not Afraid - You Are A Masterpiecer!

What is a masterpiece?  It takes a healthy mix of humility and courage to walk towards your life's fulfillment; to go where you have yet to go, to create your own unique, imperfect masterpieces.

Perhaps we need to pay more attention to the example that the lowly weed sets:  Weeds are actually unique, and when closely looked at, very intricate masterpieces.  There is no way that any of us can create that same piece of outstanding artistry.   The problem is that they dare to pop up in spaces that do not welcome or encourage them.

  If they had a society for abused weeds -  ‘unwanted’ plants - what would their complaints be?  “Help – We’re being stepped on, our feet chopped off, pulled by the hair, and spoken to quite rudely!  We thought our contribution would be appreciated but, clearly, grass is the only genus welcome."  In our finite human wisdom, we condescendingly insist on helping Mother Nature to correct her obvious errors.

The weeds know better - They are trying to tell us that our soil is actually ideal for them, that poor ‘monsieur grass’ is the one struggling to grow in the wrong spot.   Perhaps I'll stop stressing about not having perfect green carpeting everywhere out there; The patch of wild strawberries that showed up last summer in our back yard, together with bits of moss, are confirming the fact that the soil in that area is acidic – not the best soil for growing a lush lawn, but perfect for wild strawberries, and sorrel (tart but yummy on a cheese sandwich!), in other words, an edible lawn! That is just fine with me; I’m in no hurry to correct that mistake.

In this larger garden that makes up my life, I'll try to nourish my soil with plenty of that healthy humility-courage mix, and I'll keep the phone number for the Master Gardener handy for those times when my garden becomes muddled, when  my confidence becomes choked out by fear.  I'll try to picture successes as I’m making my inevitable mistakes, and I hope that some day I will look back and, lo and behold, there will be a long lineup of sparkling efforts - an imperfect but beautiful path that others may follow,  learn from, and  improve on.

I’ll just make sure I sprinkle lots of smile seeds as I go, that I speak kindly to the plants, and that I  try not to correct all of my mistakes too quickly - I may be overlooking some real masterpieces!
 Oh look - There's another dandelion, and another, and another, and an......  Peace!
