    A Song Of Hope

Whenever sadness settles in,

nettles in,

meddles in,

The song that I am coaxing

From the recess of my heart,

I give my smile a hefty spin,

A swing, a lift, and then, a grin

Breaks out and like a little bird

Soars into the sunlight, to where its song will start;

It tells me there is light out there,

Joy out there,

Hope out there,

Out past the melancholy -

The lazy spirit's haunt,

I'll free my feet and drop those shoes,

The past is past, the future new,

I still have things to say and do;

Life is so much more;

Every moment's promise is

A chance for us,

To build and thus,

To add to God's creation,

The gifts we have to share;

Let our words express our very best,

Thoughtful works of art;

An instrument as yet unstrung,

A song of hope as yet unsung,

Waits to add its colour

To the canvass of the heart.

Light, Love, and Shadows

'Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.' - Maori proverb

Where do we look when the light is obscured,
And the shadows seem to have broken their bonds,
When we feel that hope is a distant dream,
And the love within
Is drowned in the din
Of our soul crying out
For a road past our doubt,
Where surely, there must be a happy beyond;

Those shadows fall back when we turn towards the light,
For darkness cannot intrude into love,
Though it looms so large at end of the day,
And though it may try
To foster the lie
That it is much stronger,
That it will last longer;
 Love always chases the darkness away;

To ebb or grow brighter is our choice to make;
As we open the portals of our eyes and smiles,
And send our love flying in 'heartbeams' of light,
Our search comes full circle,
We need look no further,
The prayers of the humble,
Cause darkness to crumble,
We are masters of shadows; they cower in fright.

I Can't Breathe

With recent fearful events unfolding around the world, and in particular with the focus on systemic racism that was brought to light so vividly and terribly in Minneapolis this past week, I borrowed the phrase spoken by George Floyd as he died;

I Can't Breathe!

Watching cruelty unfold,
The attack on our soul,
The sliding of hope,
Down a dangerous slope,
We are better than that - aren't we?
I felt the suffocation,
I can't breathe!

The bully and bullied,
Two victims collide,
Coloured by two worlds,
While we stand and chide,
Do we consider ourselves a threat to others?
That's where fear does its best work,
I can't breathe!

Feeling fear taking hold,
Tightening its grip,
Waiting for hope
To falter and slip;
In the grip of depression,
I thrashed in the dark;
I can't breathe!

Afraid of our fellow man,
Afraid for our health,
Afraid for what might come,
The loss of our wealth,
When did  we welcome fear,
Ask it to reign,
I asked my inner child, "How did we get here?”
With a heavy sigh, she cried,
I can't breathe!

Then I felt a tug from my memory,
A tiny child in colours bright,
Reaching up to hold my hand,
No sign of anger or of fright,
Just love in all its innocence,
She poured her joy into my soul,
And took my breath away;
I can't breathe!

Isolation Blues!

Isolation Blues!

These days, we're all singing the Isolation blues in our own unique ways; some of us are feeling very out of tune and trying hard to reach those positive high notes;  For some of us, we are finding the verses getting annoyingly repetitious!
Please forgive the musical irony - It comes after listening to the many wonderful concerts, at so many levels that are being generously offered by musicians, artists and athletes, both locally and around the world to raise money to help our fellow countrymen during this time of crisis.
All of us want to contribute whatever talents we have, to express our love and thanks to all of the front line workers putting themselves at risk every day, and to help the less fortunate.   Giving back in whatever way we can,  particularly the act of sacrificing closeness with our family and friends, makes us all part of this wonderful 'Team Canada'.

As I was breathing deeply, and letting go of the stress for awhile, I wrote a simple little poem that expresses a desire for peaceful happy times.  It also encompasses gratitude for the silver lining in all of this down time - a chance to really look and listen to each other, to our children and grandchildren, and to appreciate the really important elements of life.

What if?

What if there was no war to fear,
No hurtful words
To wound the ear,
No vain attempt
To have it all,
No selfish smirks
When others fall;

What if we gathered smiles and flowers,
If loving acts
Were our super powers;
If we rose each day
In gratitude,
Spreading smiles
In happy mood;

If we, like children, saw the world,
One tiny wonder
At a time,
With curiosity
Unfurled,
Each challenge,
But a tree to climb;

What if we saw our work as play,
And laughed,
As little children do;
While giving love
In simple ways,
Needing just to hear,
 "Me too!"

Then, let us lay our troubles down,
And take some time,
Be still awhile,
Take our cue
From little ones,
Paint rainbows,
And share a smile!

Don't Worry - Be Happy This New Year!
.   "Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."    Thank you for your wise words, Mother Theresa.
This year is starting off with an air of impending doom on so many fronts, with the heaviest clouds darkening  the environment and world peace.   Some Happy New Year- right?  It is a difficult task lifting those heavy blankets and checking on the beauty that is still there, huddling underneath.  But it is there in so many forms.   Every day we are given the opportunity to contribute more beauty, more positives, more smiles to life's balance sheet.   Let us light up the darkness with a barrage of  kind acts, big and small - I know that so many of you already are.  I do not pretend to understand all of the complicated causes of depression; what I do know personally is that each time I decide to make a plan to help another, to turn my focus on another,  my happiness ratchets up many notches.  Therefore, my New Year's resolution will be to increase my awareness of others' needs, and to step out of my self-absorption more often.  I will invest in moments of prayerful silence and step often  into my "Happy Place" to restore my spirit and my kindness quotient;

My Happy Place - A Meditation

There is great peace in solitude,
While walking in a peaceful wood,
But walking through a stressful day,
With problems blocking every way,
I need to find a happy place,
A memory room,  a welcome space,
A glistening, calming ocean shore,
An oasis deep within my core.
Breathing deeply, in I walk,
Letting go of time and talk;
At times it's hard to struggle through,
When answers are obscured from view;
Yet, in that silence, I'm aware
That someone's always waiting there,
A grandma's hug,
 A friendly tug
From one who says, with humble grace,
"Welcome to
Your happy place."

Guardian Of The Light

Guardian of the Light

You can hope, and dream
Of what might have been,
Or reach for a lofty goal,
But you can't miss something
That you've never seen,
That has never held you, touched your soul;
Every life begins in light,
A unique and brilliant flame,
Yet, we long for reassurance
From the Source from whence we came,
We know that there is something more
Than what our senses tell,
And we search the world around us
For the pearl within the shell;

We spend our lives in longing
For that pure and perfect light,
For Its peace that once enfolded us,
A voice just out of sight,
That spoke our names in love, held our souls.

As time passes by, and our light outgrows us,
Our journey takes us backwards,
And at the same time forwards,
Towards where love and light will come full circle,
Pulling us into itself, enfolding us once more.

Let your soul remember and revisit that light;
Your very own unique source of loving kindness;
You are its guardian,
You alone have the power to share your light with others,
Your efforts and your choice alone
Will determine how far down the path your light will shine.

My soul is restless until it rests in You.  -  St. Augustine

In Dreams - Be Not Afraid

In Dreams
"In Dreams I walk with you,
In Dreams I talk with you."   - Roy Orbison

Many of us will have had the experience of feeling the presence of a loved one who has passed away - even to the point of catching a familiar or exotic scent.  There is so much more to this life than we can ever comprehend.  So, whether we are just remembering in a very visceral way that soul or whether they are possibly wanting to communicate something to us is beyond our actually knowing.  Sometimes we perceive these moments as a comforting hand on our shoulder, a kiss on our forehead, a prayer for our strengthening.  In this positive dream-filled light, I wrote the following:

In Dreams - Be Not Afraid
I had a dream
The other night,
A visit from a friend,
A vision so intense and real
And as close as we had been,
There was something more
In how she looked
That I could not comprehend;

Her laughter filled
The atmosphere,
She seemed without a care,
And though I reached
To touch her hand,
I only touched the air,
Still, I caught a fragrance rare;

In soft but brilliant lightness,
In and out of view she went
And I wondered  as I drifted off,
Did I call, or was she sent;
It settled all around me,
That smile I knew so well,
And lifted my own spirit,
As back to sleep I fell;

I still can feel that warmth of hope,
That brief reunion gift;
Each morning now, it wakes with me
And brings a welcome lift
That I humbly try to pass along,
In small but smiling ways,
Little bits of sunshine
To brighten others' days,
And let them know, "You are not alone,
- Be not afraid."

Lament For Friendship

Life is always both unpredictable and precious, and friendship is to be cherished.  It saddens me to see and hear the damage to the very special friendship that we have held with our neighbours to the South.  Let us pray that respect and healing will gain the upper hand.

Lament For Friendship
 What a sad thing,
When friends fall out,
And lose togetherness,
Becoming less;
When our common goals and aspirations
Become frayed - torn at the edges,
When talk is for show,
Fleeting bravado,
That weakens our bonds,
Leaves us struggling to cope,
Grasping at hope;

Why plant seeds of doubt,
What's this fear all about?
And what thanks do we send
To our struggling earth  mother,
As we feign to defend
Each from the other;

What do we gain
By inflicting pain;
In the glare of  'beware!',
How do we repair?

'Neath the weight of our words,
Our hearts long for peace,
For hurts to be healed,
For struggle to cease;

Then, let our falling out be ended,
And hands of friendship be extended;
Around this world, our common home,
Let's build a wall of toleration,
Made up of every tribe and nation's
Hands joined together in respect and love;
That would be a wall
That we could all get behind.

At My Mother's Knee

Some memories never fade away,
And that's as it should be,
When they take me back to happy times
And quiet moments  when I'd  find
Myself at Mother's knee.

Special secrets I would share,
Secret hurts and fears,
Nothing seemed too silly there,
With soothing words and hugs to spare,
She'd wipe away my tears.

I'd place my head upon her lap
And feel her hands' caressing,
What peace I felt as I knelt there ,
 Her fingers in my tousled hair,
Receiving mother's blessing.

She'd wrap me in her mother's care,
My smile was her reward;
No one could resist her grin
And soon the giggles would begin,
Good humour was restored.

Those special moments live in me
In love they have been set,
All those lovely memories
Bring me often to my knees
I feel her softness yet.

I close my eyes and hear her voice,
So musical and mild;
No greater gift could ever be,
Than hearing my mom pray for me,
Now I pray for you, my child.

The colour of sunshine!

 This was the title of one of the pieces of music that I was listening to as I did my Tai Chi routine this morning.  I find the slow meditative pace of this exercise to be a time of deep and creative thought, and of heartfelt prayer.

Though I can't see the colour of sunshine, or the substance of prayer, I know that both are powerful communicators, and can lift our hearts and spirits.  As the sun draws warm colours from everything it touches, and gives back life-giving food to mankind and the earth, I believe that prayer, though invisible to the human eye, is viewed as a beautiful, powerful rainbow of hope by the soul which, as it is lifted, shares its own amazing colours, adding to the brightness and warmth in the world.

The colour of sunshine
Depends on its diet,
If it drinks from the ocean,
Or a lake laying quiet,
Then it puts on bright blue,
With a sparkle of green,
And its hair sometimes gleams
With a hint of marine.

While crossing a meadow,
It bounces off flowers,
It feeds on red clover,
And sends back rose showers;
It picks up blue tips
From the bluegrass, I'm told,
And to compliment dandelions
Dons its bright gold.

The colour of prayer
Depends on its diet,
If it drinks caring thoughts
From a soul that is quiet,
Then it puts on bright blue
As it soars high above,
And returns, dressed in gold,
As it echoes God's love.

The Chain

The Chain

I believe that we are being born anew every day - given another chance.
Who we are,  our essence or spirit, is in the process of becoming with each breath that we take;
our spirit does not require a diet of huge achievements - it is constantly feeding off of our attitude,  It grows more beautiful with every positive thought and accomplishment, every smiling link that we add to the whole.   With each act of kindness, we are strengthening our link in the chain of life, and feeding it the energy that it needs, to be strong for all of the other links - our parents, children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, friends - all those that we hold in our hearts and who count on us.

 When the seas get rough, we can secure our vessels with that wonderful supporting chain:

Hold onto the chain,
In the midst of your pain,
Trust in the strength of each link;
Though doubts may obscure it,
Have faith and be sure, it's
Stronger by far than you think.

With great love they speak,
Each voice so unique,
Timeless, they're born yet again,
These links built of love,
Drawing strength from above,
Hand in hand forming the chain.

The Power Of A Quilt!

I know I wasn't feeling cold last night - perhaps it's the onset of Fall weather, and the promise of Winter, with all of its uncertainties, but I awoke at  3am, thinking about the multi-coloured crazy quilt that used to cover Mom & Dad's bed so many years ago.   I can remember sitting on that quilt with my sisters and playing travelling games on the beautiful landscape that we saw there; so many vibrant colours and textures - it fuelled our young imaginations!   I began wondering who had stitched that quilt - where all of the patches had originated - what clothing had been transformed.   As I wrapped myself in that warm memory, my older imagination kicked in and, lost in contemplation, I wrote the following poem:

My Crazy Quilt

Memories fade, and friends move on,
But in my heart they're bound;
I've pulled them into my crazy quilt
And stitched them all around.

I've pricked my finger many times,
But I soon forget the pain,
For my crazy quilt is a wondrous quilt,
That can never be made again.

I pull it 'round me every night
And I feel the love that's there,
All stitched up in my crazy quilt,
Each friend, a colour rare.

I've  travelled tracks, this way and that,
All up and down my life,
Those crooked stitches, funny patches,
Daughter, mother, wife.

My fingers trace the criss-cross path
That joins each memory,
And I wonder at the landscape fair
That my life has come to be.

As I live each day, I'll find a way
To gather patches new,
I'll pull them into my crazy quilt,
And I'll stitch them carefully too.

When the world seems scary, dark and dim,
I won't despair or moan,
For I'll feel the warmth of my crazy quilt,
And know I'm not alone.

Love That Bluegrass!

Love That Bluegrass!

Springtime is seriously knocking on the door, even if today’s cool grey sky is trying to ignore it.  It won’t be much longer, and that got me thinking garden thoughts:  I look back with fondness on many of the planting and weeding days, back on old Padgeberry Farm – not with enough fondness that I would attempt growing the huge quantities of produce and flowers that we tended then. Still, there were some nice bright spots there!  One of them came in the form of tiny sparks of royal blue flowers – Blue eyed grass, Sisyrinchium angustifolium (what a long name, for such a short plant!). They held up their hopeful faces, one by one – I liked to think they were smiling at me.  While the weeds in the garden threatened to overwhelm us, my two lovely niece helpers laughed, as I took great delight in talking to, and ‘weeding-in’ the blue grass plants that I discovered there - carefully moving them over, just a tad, out of the way of what I was actually attempting to grow.  Eventually, I had to give up on this well-intentioned exercise, as the sea of blue stretched a little further than manageable – Yes! That worked for me!!   My husband would roll his eyes (once more!) and give up trying to convince me that I should stop wasting my time; that they were just another weed.  I’d say, “Not so – they are just flowers growing in the wrong place(s).  Hats off to those particular weeds!”  The memory still brings a smile to my face; and so do those actual flowers whenever I find them anywhere.   Like the flowers in Dolly Parton’s, “Wildflowers Don’t Care Where They Grow”, a bluegrass gem of a different sort, they certainly don’t ask for much - they just offer their beauty wherever their seeds land.  A lesson to myself:  Whenever I am feeling overcome with the troubling weeds in life that threaten to overwhelm me, I will lift up my face, move those troubles off to the side, just a tad, and transplant smiles all around.  Think bluegrass!
